Session 2E: Communications Infrastructure Technology - A Moving Target?

Session Description: A look at various aspects and status of transportation communications in Pennsylvania

Speaker Bios:

Adam Dunlap is a senior network engineer working in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) core networks group. He focuses his work on PennDOT’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) networks and provides support and advice to PennDOT’s seven traffic management centers (TMCs) throughout the state. This includes designing and building PennDOT’s fiber network and MPLS private network architecture, which connect ITS devices back to the TMCs. Adam also works closely with PSP, PEMA, and the PA Turnpike Commission to provide communication between agencies and share ITS information.

Bob Taylor is chief technology officer for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) and oversees the operations of the Information Technology (IT) department. His primary responsibilities include strategic planning, personnel management, fiscal management, budget analysis, and project/program development. He is a former manager of traffic operations, where he was responsible for the efficient movement of traffic and goods throughout the Pennsylvania Turnpike highway system; the design, implementation and management of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure and related systems; and coordinating with other agencies to operate the Pennsylvania Turnpike highway system.

Bob graduated from Penn State in 1994 and was employed as a consultant for 21 years prior to beginning his career with the PTC.

Jeff Adler has over 25 years of experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems, specializing in emerging technology applications to support transportation systems management and operations. He joined Kapsch TrafficCom North America in February 2017, where he leads the ITS and Solution Consulting practice. His team provides technical solutions and consulting services to state and federal agencies across North America, focusing on connected vehicles, integrated corridor management, decision support systems, and truck parking.

Jeff is a registered professional engineer in six states and is actively involved in several TRB committees. He received his doctoral degree from the University of California Irvine and his bachelor’s from Carnegie Mellon University. Jeff resides in Silver Spring, Maryland.
