Mission and Goals

The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute is a major interdisciplinary research center of Penn State, administered through the College of Engineering. Founded in 1968, the Larson Institute has grown from a small research facility to one of the nation's leading university transportation centers. The Institute pursues a threefold mission of research, education, and service under the College of Engineering at Penn State.

The Larson Institute's goals are to:

  • Offer significant interdisciplinary educational and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Disseminate the results of transportation research.
  • Provide transportation-related expertise to local communities, the Commonwealth, and the nation.
  • Promote continuing education for transportation professionals.

The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute is Penn State’s transportation research center. Since its founding in 1968, the Larson Institute has maintained a threefold mission of research, education, and service. The Institute brings together top faculty, world-class facilities and enterprising students from across the University in partnership with public and private stakeholders to address critical transportation-related problems.
